The Soul Free to Fly — The Message of the Masters
“‘By living in the Pinda Desh (physical universe or multiverse) for a long time, the Surat (Attention-faculty or awareness of the soul) becomes a servant of Maya or illusion and gets completely enmeshed in Maya. In such a state, it becomes extremely difficult for the Surat-soul to extricate itself from the clutches of ‘Vasanas’, the creation of Maya for numerous lives (the wheel of transmigration and reincarnation).
“‘As a free bird becomes accustomed to the cage after it has lived there for a long time and loses its power of flying freely, so the Surat-soul or Attention, having lived as a slave of Maya for so long, also loses it freedom to fly and forgets its Original Abode. Although the human soul was pure and free, attachment to illusory objects of creation, the pleasures of the senses, have deluded it and enslaved it. Now, it continues in bondage for birth after birth and is dancing to the tune of mind and illusion (manas and maya) in the three qualities or Gunas…..
“‘The Saints advise that so long as the Attention is not attached to the Shabad or Naam [the Positive Power of God seen as inner Light and heard as inner Sound or Music], peace of mind cannot be achieved. The Surat-soul is in pain and suffering because it is separated from the Shabad. So long as the Surat-soul does not recognize Shabad and unite itself with it, it will never get real happiness nor will it discover the mortality or falsehood of the worldly objects. This is the import of eternal and peaceful life. This is called Surat Shabad Yoga [inner Light and Sound Meditation]. Therefore, the way by which the Surat-soul has descended, it must retrace, and ascend by the same route under the guidance of the Saints. Only then, the aim of human life will be fulfilled and real happiness attained.’
“On hearing these words, there arose a fresh enthusiasm and interest in the hearts of the devotees for meditation. All of them imbibed the Divine Words in their hearts and felt really blessed. The Fourth Master enlightened such a path to the devotees, by treading which, they could attain divine bliss. He told them again and again, ‘Open the Divine Eye’ and thus infused in them a new spirit to go within and try their best to open the Divine Eye.”

What a magnificent verse from the Jesus Sutras, a collection of Nestorian scriptures found in China that reveal this amazing synthesis of Taoist, Nestorian (Church of the East), and Buddhist spirituality!
Most of the time we human beings are distracted surface-dwellers. We live from the levels of conscious mind and ego, with our attention hopelessly held captive by the turbulence and agitation of our day-to-day circumstances. If we can develop a daily meditation practice, learn to take a break and detach ourselves, allowing some space for the silence to speak to us, we will gain access to a higher wisdom. If we can pause and listen, taking time each day to meditate, this will provide opportunities for angels, the Inner Master-Power or the Great Invisible Spirit to communicate, to whisper into our inner ear.
“Learn to sit still and be mentally still, and the silence thus generated with be more vocal than words spoken and written; and you will have an instantaneous solution not only to your own personal problems but to the problems of others as well.” (Kirpal Singh, The Way of the Saints)
Insight will come to us in the silence of meditation. We will be inspired in ways we never thought possible. Creativity will flow as never before. A Divine Voice will lead us in new positive directions, and ultimately will guide us Above.

By giving birth to our selves in the ‘womb’ of silent meditation, the higher Self or Spirit becomes not only a theoretical center of our being, but a reality we directly experience. We learn to begin living from the center of our being, tapping into a higher wisdom coming from the level of the Self or Spirit, soul and Oversoul.
“So long as we cannot have this restful silence within us, the soul cannot listen to the Voice of silence arising out of the greatest depths of Silence. The Wisdom of Abdul-BAHA of the Bahai Faith on the Power of Silence
Abdul-BAHA was a mystic and the second leader of the Bahai Faith. One of my favorite Bahai texts features Abdul-BAHA’s talk given at a Quaker Meeting House at Saint Martin’s Lane, in London, Sunday, January 12th, 1913. It’s an incredibly wonderful talk that, for me, sums up the mystical, contemplative journey rather nicely.
Of this path of inner guidance and revelation he says: “About one thousand years ago a society was formed in Persia called the Society of the Friends, who gathered together for silent communion with the Almighty.
“They divided Divine philosophy into two parts: one kind is that of which the knowledge can be acquired through lectures and study in schools and colleges. The second kind of philosophy was that of the Illuminati, or followers of the inner Light. The schools of this philosophy were held in silence. Meditating, and turning their faces to the Source of Light, from that central Light the Mysteries of the Kingdom were reflected in the hearts of these people. All the Divine problems were solved by this power of illumination.
“….When they assemble in their meeting-house they sit silently and contemplate; their leader opens with a certain proposition, and says to the assembly ‘You must meditate on this problem’. Then, freeing their minds from everything else, they sit and reflect, and before long the answer is revealed to them. Many abstruse divine questions are solved by this illumination…..
“Through the faculty of meditation man attains to eternal life; through it he receives the breath of the Holy Spirit — the bestowal of the Spirit is given in reflection and meditation.
“The spirit of man is itself informed and strengthened during meditation; through it affairs of which man knew nothing are unfolded before his view. Through it he receives Divine inspiration, through it he receives heavenly food.
“Meditation is the key for opening the doors of Mysteries. In that state man abstracts himself: in that state man withdraws himself from all outside objects; in that subjective mood he is immersed in the ocean of spiritual life and can unfold the secrets of things-in-themselves. To illustrate this, think of man as endowed with two kinds of sight; when the power of insight is being used the outward power of vision does not see…..
“This faculty brings forth from the invisible plane the sciences and arts. Through the meditative faculty inventions are made possible, colossal undertakings are carried out….. Through this faculty man enters into the very Kingdom of God.
“Nevertheless some thoughts are useless to man; they are like waves moving in the sea without result. But if the faculty of meditation is bathed in the inner Light and characterized with divine attributes, the results will be confirmed.”
Note: The statement above mentioning the philosophy “of the Illuminati” is not about conspiracy theories or nefarious secret societies. In this case, “Illuminati” is referring to those enlightened or ‘illumined’ by the inner Light. Abdul-BAHA was speaking at a gathering of Quakers or Society of Friends, and they describe themselves as followers of the inner Light — an important teaching in Quakerism, and Quakers have also cultivated the same spiritual practice of seeking guidance about the affairs of life and eternity in the silence of contemplative meditation.
Good to make time every day for being self-introspective, to ponder the meaning of the events in one’s life and be genuinely inspired by the insights revealed during meditation. The silence is speaking volumes to us. If we can tap into this inner wisdom, it will transform our lives, allowing us to be more spiritually centered. Ego, mind, karma and fate only go so far. Divine grace busts into the world of time and space offering something higher, a way forward.
“Deep within us all there is an amazing inner sanctuary of the soul, a holy place, a Divine Center, a speaking Voice, to which we may continually return.” (A Testament of Devotion, by Thomas Kelly, Quaker mystic)

Listening to and study of the discourses on this sacred knowledge is an important step in the Sant Mat tradition. Listening to satsang (spiritual discourses) is prescribed as an essential activity.
The personal and private instruction in the art of this spiritual practice should be received from a Satguru (an accomplished spiritual master). Once the technique has been learned, one should practice it regularly and daily according to the instructions given by the master.
The transition from the waking state to the dreaming state is automatic and results in mental cares being left with an ensuing sense of relaxation. Similarly, in concentrating the mind and positioning it toward one-pointedness (intense internal transition), mental cares are left behind and a sense of ease pervades.
Concerning this, Kabir Sahab said:
“Hai kucha rahani gahani ki Bata,
Baitha rahe cala puni jata.”
“There is something mysterious in such
activity in that in sitting, one walks.”
Sant Radhaswami Sahab said:
“Baithe ne rasta kata, calate ne bata na pai”
“He who sat finished the journey; he
who walked could not find the way.”
To move spiritually upward within one’s self, through and beyond the Realms, is to progress towards union with the Supreme Sovereign. This practice is devotion to the Supreme Sovereign and is unfailing. This spiritual practice is for attaining the perfect Knowledge of the Self and is also called the Antarik Satsanga ([inner satsang], inner effort to meet the Supreme Sovereign).

Inner Light and Sound Meditation Practice and the Ascension of the Soul According to Sant Tulsi Sahib
The Surat i.e. consciousness-force [awareness, attention-faculty of the soul] has gotten a glimpse of the Radiant Master, and it has realized the happiness of meeting with the Supreme Sovereign God within the inner Sky (sphere within oneself when the eyes are closed). I have always spoken on this matter.
The Surat i.e. consciousness-force or individual soul [soul’s faculty of attention or awareness] is true, and she has been extended and entrapped in the untrue realms of Pinda (physical plane, the microcosm or body), and Brahmand (Universe or macrocosm). So, being deprived of the attainment of the Self-existence of the Supreme Sovereign God, she is suffering from the pain of falling down (degeneration). To be free from this pain of degeneration, take care of the Surat in such a way that she be liberated from all miseries by concentrating through the untrue realms, becoming free from untrue spheres, and thus attaining the innate (natural and pure) form of the Supreme Sovereign God.
The practice of holding Surat (consciousness-force) will begin with 1.) Maanas Jap ([simran], a meditation process in which an alphabetical holy name taught by the Guru is mentally chanted or repeated with eyes closed), 2.) then Maanas Dhyaan (a meditation process in which the holy form of the Satguru is mentally visualized and contemplated upon with eyes closed). 3.) After that, Bindu Dhyaan (Drishti Saadhan, Yoga of Vision/inner Light), and 4.) then finally, Surat Shabda Yoga (the Yoga of Divine Sound).
The first veil within our inner space is hard and impenetrable darkness. The Surat can cross it by the practice of Dhrishti Saadhan (Yoga of Vision/inner Light).
When the Surat (consciousness-force) will experience the miracles of Brahma within its own body while crossing the concealment of darkness, then she (the Surat-soul) will be immersed always in the love of Supreme Sovereign God. Then she will move ahead grasping the notes (Sounds) of the Flute by knowing the proper method.
The Surat will recognize the Sar-Shabda (Essential Divine Sound) through catching the ‘Gagan-Dori’ — (Divine Light or Divine Sound of the Inner Sky).
The Surat, being poised onto the Essential Divine Sound (Sar-Shabda), will become tranquil in that Unlimited (Infinite) State where form, design, appearances, body, mind and Maya (illusion) do not exist; and that is the Inexpressible and the fundamental Original State.
To whom this Ultimate State will be realized, his/her Surat (consciousness-force, individual soul) will be merging into that Ultimate State (the Nameless, Soundless — the State beyond the Sound) again and again.
Sant Tulsi Sahab says, “Grasp and examine that Current (internal divine Sound) which leads to this Ultimate State, only then mind will be diving in the true experience of the above-mentioned inner journey.”

The great saints are so strong in their magnetism that they can change you by their mere presence. The company you keep plays a crucial role, for the people in our lives are the most important aspect of our environment.
I remember a man who got into a mood and decided he didn’t want to be around people anymore. So for some weeks he avoided all spiritual gatherings. Then, more or less by accident, he ended up in a group at the home of a highly advanced spiritual teacher where a public programme was going on.
Afterwards he told me: “I thought I was doing fine by myself. I thought I could decide what it feels like to be spiritually in tune. But now that I’m back in touch with real spiritual energy, I can see how far I was drifting away.”
When we get away from the consciousness of Spirit, we can quickly forget what that consciousness feels like. There’s no escaping the reality that we must do our individual practices. As a great saint put it, “If you want to find God, you must spend a great deal of time alone. But without the company of other spiritual seekers — satsang, or “fellowship with truth” — we’ll very likely end up keeping company with the ego. Once the ego gets hold of us, it casts a veil over our minds. And the longer we enjoy the dubious comforts of ego-consciousness, the greater the danger that we’ll drift away from the spiritual path.
One of the most helpful things you can do to find God’s love is to meditate with other devotees. Meditating with others, first of all, helps you generate much more spiritual energy than you can alone. And meditating together teaches you to love in a different way.
We are accustomed to think of our relationships in outward terms. But when you meditate together, you touch a place where you are one in God, and the contact of your souls brings you closer than you might ever imagine you could be.
I know with absolute certainty that I would never get anywhere on the spiritual path if it weren’t for my friends. While it’s true that the transforming power of God comes through the guru, I find that the ability to understand and accept what God is asking of me often comes from my fellow seekers.
When I came onto the spiritual path and began to associate with spiritual people, I realized that there were a handful of friends whom I could rely on as my spiritual “barometers,” if you will. Whenever I had ideas or feelings or moods, I would deliberately spend time with them. I would say “This is what I think” and they might say “No, it’s like this.” But it wasn’t so much their words as their presence that helped me, because when I was with them I could feel the rightness or wrongness of my thoughts and feelings.
Every time I would feel a little dissonant with the people I respected as spiritual aspirants, I would think, “If I don’t feel in harmony with the Spirit in these people who are my fellow seekers and my satsangis, then I’ve need to keep trying to attune my consciousness until I feel that inner harmony.” Although God lives in us, we must learn to live in God and this we can do easily through the loving friendship, caring, mutual concern, and responsibility that we have for one another. With satsang we all grow spiritually.
Mirabai’s Mystical Experiences
Mira gives indications of her inner experiences in some of her poems:
My Beloved dwells in my heart,
I have actually seen that Abode of Joy.
Mira’s Lord is Hari, the Indestructible.
O Lord, I am mad for Your love,
but who can understand my pain?
None but the wounded can know of the
anguish of the wounded.
Drink the nectar of the Divine Name,
O human! Drink the nectar of the Divine Name!
Leave the bad company,
always sit among righteous company.
Hearken to the mention of God (for your own sake).
Concupiscence, anger, pride, greed, attachment:
wash these out of your consciousness.
Mira’s Lord is the Mountain-Holder,
the suave lover.
Soak yourself in the dye of His colour.
I kept searching for the secret
Of that Realm but none could reveal it.
When Sant Ravidas, my Master, I met
He gave my soul the clue
to that Eternal Abode.
Then I ascended and met my Beloved;
And my anguish was finally allayed.
When Ravidas, the perfect Master, I met
The severed twig joined again the tree.
My Master revealed the secret of the Name,
The flame of Mira merged into the Flame.
0 friend, the firmament within
Resounds with the Divine Melody.
Listen, my soul, to the clanging Sound
That reverberates without any cymbals.
On the peak of Sunn* burns a lamp;
Forever it burns without any wick or oil.
Describing the bliss of one of the inner regions Mira says:
In Bhanwar Gupha** revel bumble bees#
in joy around flowers of bliss.
Flowers whose fragrance overwhelms
them with ecstasy.
Within Bhanwar Gupha swing souls
Souls, who on getting the body
of five elements,+
Did light the lamp of divine knowledge
My eyes oblivious of all else now gaze
at the Beloved without blinking.
The stupor caused by endless wanderings
And the Beloved speaks to Mira directly.

1) Now, therefore, we shall expound the religion of Divine Love. [Bhakti is intense love for God.]
2) That, truly, is of the nature of Supreme Love of God.
3) And in its own intrinsic nature, Divine Love is nothing less than the immortal bliss of freedom (Mukti) itself, which comes unsolicited by the grace of God and by self-sacrifice.
4) Gaining that, man realizes his perfection and divinity and becomes thoroughly contented.
5 — 9) Pure spiritual devotion is achieved when all desires drop away such as grief, hate, fleeting happiness or desire for personal gain. The result is the realization of ones true Self. The spiritual devotee becomes intoxicated and overwhelmed with the bliss of union with the Supreme. This bliss comes not from desire but from the true nature from within which is stillness. This inner stillness makes sacred the required functions that arise from one’s position in life. The blissful inner stillness is a product of a total focus on God and the successful avoidance of anything that would deflect one from that focus. [Giving up all other refuge, he takes refuge in God.]
In the Sant tradition there are several “big books”, huge collections of the prose, poetry and hymns (banis, bhajans, kirtans) of Masters. These include: the Adi Granth (Shri Guru Granth Sahib), the Kabir Sagar (including one volume from it known as the Anurag Sagar), the Bijak of Kabir, the Panch Vani (“Songs of the Five” — words of Sant Dadu Dayal, Kabir, Namdev, Ravidas, and Hardas), writings of Dariya Sahib of Bihar, Tulsi Sahib of Hathras, the Bachans and Banis of Radhasoami, and the Shri Paramhans Advait Mat Granth.

The repetition of the holy Names is the truest spiritual technique. An uninterrupted inner repetition of the holy Names given by the living Master has to be practiced daily with love, devotion, and one-pointed attention. One thereby transcends one’s body and is transported to the realms of Light.
The repetition develops into an ever-going spontaneous process, and one catches the unceasing inner Music which takes one to its Source, and reveals God face to face. One is, therefore, exhorted to search daily for the Source of this Unstruck Music. Whatever one does and wherever one happens to be, one is asked to be a sacrifice unto His Name and to have ardent longing to behold Him and hear His voice.

is true; all else is delusion.”
The Name, the essential Truth of the
three worlds, alone is efficacious.
With discrimination, repeat it exclusively
day and night, 0 mind.
At every breath be devoted to it, and
thy Beloved will meet thee one day.
Repetition is the path leading to bliss;
thus hath the Master explained.
Be dedicated to God moment by moment,
even if thou art to lose thy life.
No other way is there to support
Who is that ill-fated one preaching some
Without the Name, tell me, where can
one find a foothold? asketh Dadu.
Let not the Name be separated for
a moment from within thy heart,
Millions have been purified by
repeating God’s Name alone.
Be dedicated to God while the body
is in good condition,
Else later on, when the body and mind
are worn out, thou shalt repent,
The whole world is full of poison; rarely
someone is free from it, 0 Dadu.
He alone will be free from poison
who is steeped in the Name
of the Supreme Lord.
Repeat the Name with the pang of
separation, and sing its glory with
love and devotion.
Fix thy mind in repetition with joy and
dedication, 0 Dadu.
While speaking or listening, giving
or taking, eating or drinking,
Repeat the Name of God at all times,
0 Dadu, thus shalt the self rest
in the inner lotus.
